PUYALLUP DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION PLAN & CITY IMAGE STUDY
Puyallup, Washington
The primary goal of this planning and design study was to provide definition and focus for the redevelopment of the historic downtown area of Puyallup. The local community desired the creation of a comprehensive improvement plan to promote quality business, cultural, and housing growth. A workshop and charette format generated an action plan with a prioritized list of private, community, and government projects. A comprehensive streetscape design package that included sidewalks, street trees, signage, and parking was presented. The City Image Study developed prototype site modeling and design standards in various housing and commercial zones to meet requirements for the Growth Management Act.
As a result of the studies, Puyallup has adopted many of the recommendations as part of their new comprehensive Downtown Plan. Four major downtown building renovation projects have begun, local banks have created a restoration loan fund to assist with financing, and streetscape improvement work has proceeded per the plan.
The consultant team for this project consisted of Tonkin Hoyne Lokan, Ron Kasprisin, and Barbara Oakrock.
