GENERAL:
Les Tonkin has been in private practice in Seattle for over 25 years. He has been responsible for the design of many significant public and private buildings in the Northwest. Tonkin's specialties are new, low income and multi-family housing, and additions to and restoration of historic structures. These historic buildings have had a variety of uses including courthouses, city halls, libraries, administrative offices, athletic facilities, schools, and public, low-income, family or elderly housing. Projects include the Washington School, San Juan County Courthouse, King County Courthouse, Port Townsend Library, Hoquiam Library, the King County Libraries and the $24 million, 512 unit housing renovation project at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. Recent Seattle projects include the renovations of the historic Bush Hotel, Morrison Hotel and 225 unit, 11-story Frye Hotel to provide low income housing.

Tonkin was planner and architect for the Scattered Site Housing Apartments for the Seattle Housing Authority and was responsible for design and management of 104 units of low income, multi-family housing on 22 Seattle residential sites. Tonkin was principal-in-charge for the 30-unit recently completed Denice Hunt Townhomes in Seattle, the 24-unit Matsusaka Townhomes, and Dixon Village, a 31 unit, low income housing development for the Tacoma Housing Authority. Villa Park, a 43 unit, low income multi-family housing for the Seattle Housing Authority, was completed in 1997 and was featured with the Denice Hunt Townhomes as Seattle Times/AIA Award Programs for excellence in multi-family housing design in June 1998.

He recently designed the historic renovation of the Washington School to provide elderly housing for the Walla Walla Housing Authority. Les was chief architect and planner for the Seattle/King County Homeless Coalition on the Sand Point Community Planning Study. He is also Planner/Architect for the Seattle Housing Authority’s redevelopment of the 900-unit High Point Family Housing, and the 500 units of family housing at Rainier Vista. Les is currently heading up the redesign of Roxbury Village, another SHA 235-unit redevelopment, which was recently awarded $17 million from HUD's Hope VI program.

As an urban designer, Tonkin was the local architect on the successful Seattle Housing Authority Holly Park, $47 million HUD Hope VI application, and was chief designer for the Redevelopment of the Seattle Housing Authority’s Rainier Vista, which was awarded another HUD Hope VI grant of $35 million to produce almost 1000 units of new multi-family, low income and market rate housing.
